Lyndell Wine Label

I am in the process of designing a wine label for a mock company called "Lyndell". One of my ideas was to have a die-cut bottle shape in the front of the label so the wine can show through. As the wine "disappears" there are reasons why the bottle keeps getting emptier.

Self Portrait- Life Drawing

This was my final for Life Drawing where we had to do a full-bodied self portrait. I chose to use dark gray drawing paper to set the mid tones, and used charcoal, conte and oil pastel for the color. It took about 15 hours, but turned out beautifully.

Clip Art Illustration

This was our third project, and we had to incorporate 18 different clip art images from a book about clothing and fashion. We all got to create and compose our own scene AND we had to add in ourselves dressed in costume. I turned myself into a juggling clown, and placed each character into the scene. This is watercolor with Micron pen detail and an India ink background. This was extremely time consuming but the end result was amazing.

3-word Illustration

This was my favorite project from this class! We picked 3 pieces of paper out of an envelope, and each piece had a word written on it. We had to then illustrate a scene that tied all 3 words together. My 3 words were "time", "jail" and "growth". This was actually my first idea, which is sometimes my best one. It took a little while to convince my teacher to let me use the stuffed bunny, but in the end I won! This was done with watercolor and prisma pencil over it.

Cambodia tri-fold Travel Brochure

Our final project was to design a travel brochure for a place of our choice. I chose to do Cambodia, located next to Thailand. It's a beautiful and exotic place that not a lot of people would generally think of going to. I researched photographs and travel information before creating my layout. I decided to use bold, in-your-face photographs and a simple yet striking page spread. The colors were used to tie the whole brochure together. All in all- this is one of my favorite yet challenging projects.

The next project we were assigned was to create a logo for a travel agency called Excursions. I chose to combine the earth with the daggers of a compass, and then add a road to symbolize the "journey" or "excursion" that the tourists will embark on. The font is simple and does not distract from the complexity of the logo.

"Trafficking Cinderella" movie poster

Our third assignment was to create a movie poster about a documentary- one that already existed or one based off an article we found. I chose a documentary about sex trafficking called Trafficking Cinderella. I wanted the poster to be dark and portray a story of the real-life horror that happens to these young girls. I found a photo online and then added my own typography designs and splattered blood- courtesy of Photoshop brushes. I am pleased with this piece, even if it isn't standard horizontal poster format!

"The Spurs" Album Cover

We had to design a CD album cover for a band our classmates made-up called "The Spurs". They are a mix of country music and rap beats, and presented the challenge of making sure the cover had a blend of the two genres. The country design was easy, but then came the g=hard part- graffiti. I took a basic font outline and created each individual layer of color, stitch pattern and reflection. It took about 5 hours! But the complete look is what I wanted.

Seashell Swimwear Stationery Set

This is the stationary set i worked on after the logo design. The company is a modern and edgy one, so I wanted to portray that in the stationary and appeal to a younger audience. The borders consist of a a jpg photograph of really beautiful green and bluish bamboo. I wanted to create a contrast between that and the center of the white, where the information needs to go. So I placed a dark brown layer over the bamboo to darken it up a lot. I then pulled colors from the flower and scalloped edges to tie in the contact info. I'm very pleased with this project!

2 Character Design Project

This was a project I am working on for my Intro to Advertising and Graphic Design class. The assignment was to take 2 letters from the alphabet (one had to have curves) and arrange them so that one was dominant. Only using black and white, we had to develop 20 working thumbnails and then present them to the class. After the first critique, he gave us 7 other conditions we had to follow, relating it to a real-life situation where a client comes to you with a list of requirements. Among those conditions were creating visible texture, using symmetry, manipulating size and familiarity, and adjusting placement. As you can see, the texture ones were my favorite and looking at them I see that they are quite similar; nothing like my other 14!

I made this logo for a friend going into photography. She wanted a camera with the lens as an eye, so i upgraded that to a type i knew had a circular "a" i could use to incorporate her initials. I'm running it by her this weekend, so we'll see how she likes it. Designed in Illustrator.

Surfin Sombrero logo

This is a logo I did for a relative's concession stand, called "Surfin Sombrero". They saw the logo I did for Beach Break, and wanted something similar. I drew up a sketch for them and within 2 hours it was in the computer as a vector. I decided to use gradients in stead of flat colors to make the image POP and really give it a finished look. It was fairly simple to create. I used the pencil tool in Illustrator, and then manipulated the lines to get them where i anted them. I had fun, and it's a simple piece to put in my portfolio.

Baby Announcement 4x6 cards

These are a few single image 4x6 cards for baby announcements. They are pretty basic, but there is a lot of room for adding individuality for each client. These mock-ups are already filled in with details, but those and even the quotes can be changed. The colors are also open for change at the client's request. Again, these are only the SINGLE image cards. I'll be posting some 3 and even 5 image announcements soon!

Incredibeast logo variations

These are variations of the logo Incredibeast I did for my cousin. I sent these to him with various fonts and placements. He then chose his two favorites, and I put them onto a black background. I really like them, and am pleased with how they turned out. It's pretty simple, but he liked it and it made him happy.. so that makes me happy!

Incredibeast- Logo Process

The process of creating a logo can be fairly simple, depending on the difficulty of the sketch soon to be a vector, the pickiness of the client, and the creativity of the designer. This logo was done for my cousin, who's design alias is "Incredibeast".
I first sent him several sketches of various monsters, and had him choose which one he liked the most. After that selection, i scanned the drawing into the computer, opened Illustrator, and went right to work.

The first thing to do is to outline the sketch, using the pen tool. I use a bright color for the outline so that I can see where i'm going. I try to follow the lines of the drawing as close as possible, but sometimes I tweak it to improve the vector.

After the outlines lines are complete and each appendage is a closed shape, I begin to fill each outline with a color. This is a simple graphic with little detail, so i've used only 3 colors (black and white don't count).

The result is this- an adorable and ferocious little monster! If the client chooses, I would then proceed to add scales, shading, gradients, shadows, etc to make it look more complete, but for a higher price. This simple type starts out between $150 and $200.

The final step would be to add type or text. I will post another blog with my variations for this logo, but this one in particular was one that I liked. The type can make or break a logo, and the designer must be careful in the selection of a font that compliments, without being overbearing or too shy. The placement of the logo versus the type is also vital. With this version, I choose to place the monster over the lettering. Other versions had the text put in and around the logo.
The final product is unique, and should make the customer feel satisfied and pleased with your work. After all, you just gave birth to a tiny creation all your own!

Unicorn Boy and Seahorse Girl

I did this illustration for a short story/song series. It's about a little Unicorn Boy... i have not named him yet, who meets a Seahorse Girl... nameless as well. Anyways, the illustrations still need work, and i'm trying to decide what I should do to make the Girl look more like a seahorse. Any thoughts??? Created in Illustrator.

So... i've been working on the identity design for a company called Avlynx for my uncle and his friend. They install home theatre systems, and customize and design plasma screen TV's and speakers and stuff. It's pretty cool, and they asked me to design their logo, business cards, letterhead, postcards. and eventually a tri-fold brochure. I'm really excited about it, since it's my first real client! ha ha.
This was originally the logo I posted last month, but i've made some significant changes to the design after a meeting with the clients. I removed the headphones and scribbles, :( which I really liked, but I guess it's what the customer wants... right? And then I added the blue color instead of red, changed the font to Myriad -pro and Aubrey, and designed the speakers for the background. So after all of that!... I showed to one of the clients, and he loved it! I'm so happy, and it's really coming together. I'll post the final products in a little bit.

Please Travel Green icons [final]

These are the final "green initiative" and "amenities" icons that we will be using for the Please Travel Green website. They were created in Illustrator, but after i exported them they got a little funky with the lossy and the outer glow did something crazy as well. haha. I've spent about 4 weeks on them, and i'm pleased at how they turned out. Only a few are vector graphics purchased from istockphoto, but that was only to save on time.

AVLYNX logo [1]

I'm doing identity design for a company called AVLYNX, who does home theater installations, TV mounting, multi room speakers, media centers, remote programming, etc. This is only one of the design ideas i had, and there is so much that still has to be done, but i thought this little was pretty cool! Vector illustration, and various fonts. I also love the scribble design... it adds to the overall look. Since the Audio Visual (AV) needed to stick out more than their original font, i decided to break it up without separating the two. The "lynx" part of the name is a type of cat, so that's how i came up with the idea to do a cat!

Bamboo Cambodia- Asian Cuisine

This is a little something I designed for my friend's "future restaurant". He spent 2 years in Cambodia, and grew up with his father as a very predominant chef everywhere from St. George, Utah to Japan. Joe has just recently changed his major from Gastroplastology to Business in Culinary Arts. I'm so proud of him, and his excitement for the future. This logo needs major work! but it's coming along nicely. It was Joe's original idea... i just threw it on the computer!

These are some of the smaller icons used for the "green initiatives" on the site. There will be about 30-40 total icons, nut these were the first ones I created. They are from the original vector illustration (further down the page!) however I decided to use the shape of the large logo boxes to unify the smaller icons. The boxes are a solid color, so I decided to use gradients to fill the vectors, making them really pop out! I love the effect, and the way everything is so organized. It took only a few moments to realize how everything is finally coming together!

Here is another 4 x 6 business card for my Mom's photography business. It's only one-sided, and something that she could easily print out at a photo kiosk for only about $0.15 or so. It was created in InDesign, and then exported as a PDF and jpg's. The first one is to advertise to seniors, and the second is for advertising babies and newborns.

Cambria's Graduation Announcement

This is my most recent graphic design project. It's my sister's graduation on June 12th, and she wanted a 4 x 6 card to put into her announcements. She told me which pictures she wanted, and then we chose a paper background. I decided to pick a color band that went along with her prom dress, and then used the same color in the text for the quote. The font for her name was downloaded [Olho de Boi] and the signature is [Jane Austen]. Created in InDesign.

Smithsonian Brochure

This was another project for my graphic design class. We had to create a brochure for any Smithsonian gallery of exhibit. I choose an online gallery of American Style Posters. The fold of the brochure is really unique and interesting, but it's a little hard to show with just a flat PDF. It was created in InDesign, and I had to start over halfway through the project! Jeff said my first one was good, but it would be too much work for me with how complicated the fold was. :( It took me no time at all to snap back and create this!

United Electric Ads- Statewide

This was the first ad i did for Statewide Publishing, who do phone books in Tri-cities, Washington and Helena, Montana. My friend's dad is a co-owner of Statewide, so he got me some work with them. I was a little scared when i first did this, but i think they turned out pretty good! The first one is for a half page space, the second is a double quarter column, and the last is a quarter column ad. I also re-designed the light-bulb in Illustrator.

This was a logo design that i did for the beginning of my Graphic Design class. Jeff had us choose a business in town (Cedar City) and create a new logo for them. It was really an exciting project! I choose Beach Break, a little skate and "beach wear" store. It was created in Illustrator. I designed the black and white one first, then added color to finish the final design.

Aesthetic Apparatus Brochure

This is a brochure for Digital Imaging. We had to create a 4-page brochure featuring the artwork of a famous designer, or artist. I chose the design team of Aesthetic Apparatus, two graphic designers who produce the artwork for cd covers and album art, posters and logos of bands and companies such as Burton Snowboards, The Submarines, Fountains of Wayne, The Strokes, and Lewis Black. This brochure, created in InDesign, was a blend of various works of art for the background and then the gallery of their work in larger boxes. The title and name of the brochure was made from actual letters that i clipped out of several magazines.

this year was pretty fabulous.
i got an ihome alarm, the Office season 3, money towards an acoustic guitar, some sweet guitar picks from my little bro, a few dvd's, an Andy Warhol bag, fuzzy warm polka dot pajamas, a scarf that my sister knitted me, and the new chocolate phone.

and that stuff sorta counted for my birthday too, which was on the 22nd. lame! ha ha.
but we went to San Diego and had a fun day at Sea World. i love that place!
we saw Shamu, the dolphins, ate tons of cotton candy, watched cute little kitties and dogs perform, saw the bay from the over-water ride, and saw baby seals playing on the ice.

we also ate ate this amazing Japanese all-you-can-eat sushi buffet. i must have eaten at least one bite of everything! (my sister and i are pretty adventurous)
but at 27 bucks a person, we had to get our money's worth!

charcoal and eraser

these are a few of my drawings from my spring drawing class.
the fabric study ones were difficult, but i learned a lot.
the first is white conte crayon on black paper, and the shapes are charcoal pencil.
my favorite ones though, are the girl from behind and the man. i used a very interesting technique where i poured powdered graphite over a drawing pad and rubbed it into the paper. then i used my kneaded eraser to pull out the color of the dark graphite. this allows you to draw the highlights and light spots first, which is fun!

the illuminated initials project took me forever!!! i got images from the web and created a template in Photoshop to look off of. I used Prismacolor pencils, and did it on cardstock.
the other two designs were for 2-D design, and are just black on white paper. they are interesting designs, although not my favorite. it was a pretty weird assignment.

"ocean art"

these were done for my 2-D design class last spring. the glass one was so much fun! i loved it. it started by me watering down acrylic paint to wash over bristol board. i then ripped up magazines (most of them were Martha Stewart, ha ha) and glued them to the board. after that, i arranged the glass pieces and glued them down. it was quite a few hours to put together, but i like how it turned out.
the beach one was watercolor-acrylic. it's not my favorite, but i like how the detail of the water turned out.
